Parmesan Cheese Bowls multiple bowls
I actually made these back in 2013 for a Valentine Luncheon I had for my girlfriends.  My friend, Sheri, had had them at a party, and told me about them, and I knew I had to give them a try!

The theme that year was salad and pizza.  These parmesan cheese salad bowls and the Spinach Artichoke Pizza were the hits of the party!   I mean who can resist all of that cheeeese??

One thing I have learned over the years of making these bowls? Grate your own cheese.  Originally, I used the packaged shredded parmesan cheese, and as you can see from that old photo, the bowls were pretty, but what you can’t tell?  The taste.

Why You Should Grate your own Cheese:

  • It tastes better.  It has no added chemicals or additives to preserve it in the packages.  You get to enjoy the real fresh taste of the cheese.  Not what they used to make it last longer in that package.
  • It melts better. Those preservatives and additives to that bagged shredded cheese helps to keep it from sticking together.  The starches they add will inhibit the cheese from that creamier, smoother melt you get when you shred your own from a block of cheese.
  • It’s more economical.   Don’t let the price tag on an 8 ounce block of cheese sway you to purchase an 8 ounce bag of cheese.  Did you know you will actually get more cheese out of a block of cheese that’s the same size? Yep.  Don’t forget that bag of cheese comes with a “convenience charge.”
  • and for heaven’s sake don’t use that stuff in the can.  That will require its own list of reasons.

So, buy that block of real Parmesan cheese, grate it yourself and you’ll see and taste the difference.  I promise! And hey, you’ll even get in a bit of an arm workout in the process.

So now that we know what kind of cheese to use, ( and not to use)  let’s talk about what else you need to make these edible cheese bowls successfully.

Parmesan Cheese Bowls prep bowls

You need to have 2, microwave safe, dinner plates, good quality parchment paper and 2, microwave safe, nesting bowls.   Make sure when you select your bowls they aren’t too big, and they nest tightly.  I used the bowls that came with my set of dishes and they worked perfectly.

Start by inverting one bowl onto a dinner sized plate, set aside.

Cut your parchment paper to cover your microwave safe plate. In the center of the plate, on the parchment paper, place about 1/2 cup of cheese and spread into a circle with your fingers.

It should be about 1/2″ bigger than your bowl you are mimicking. You don’t need to be exact, and there can be small holes. Those give a more “lattice” effect when they are done.

Place in the microwave and cook for 2 minutes. The cheese will bubble and start to brown.

Parmesan Cheese Bowls prep cheese flip

Take it out of the microwave, and carefully (IT’S HOT!) flip it upside down, with the parchment, onto the bowl inverted on to the plate. Cover with other bowl to form the cheese bowls.

After about 30 seconds, take off of the bowl while they are still warm. They cool quickly, make sure to cool them before stacking them.

I used the same piece of parchment for all 4 bowls, and never had a problem.

I filled the bowls with an Italian chop salad.  Worst part about them? Keeping my family from eating them before the salad was in them! 😉   They are so addictive! If you have ever eaten a Parmesan Cheese Crisp, you know what I mean!
